New Dog, New Rules! You’re Home, Now what?

You’ve decided on the perfect dog for your family, brought them home; now what? It can be overwhelming if this is your first pet, but we have some suggestions that will make the transition a little easier.

Puppy conversations are serious

Puppy conversations are serious

·        Find a safe space for you pup’s crate, toys and food. Your dog should be able to get up and comfortably turn around in his crate. If you have a puppy, make sure you have a crate that he can grow into. A lot of crates now have a movable panel that will allow room for puppy growth.

·        Have a separate bed for them in the family area. This will give them their place to relax.

·        Bedding should be comfortable and washable. Another consideration is durability. Bedding that shreds easily can be a choke hazard or stomach blockage.

·        A six foot solid leash and properly fitted collar are a must. While flexi leads are tempting, be aware they are a danger to dog and handler a like.

·        Toys should also pass the durability test.  Kongs or other durable interactive toys will serve a multitude of purposes in your dog’s training.

·        Find a consistent feeding station for your dog. Keep in mind some dogs are enthusiastic eaters and drinkers and messes will happen. Regular cleanings of the floor and dog bowls should be part of the routine

·        Setting a routine for your dog is essential.  Build a routine around potty times, feeding times, play times, and rest times. This routine will help in your training.

·        Rest time is especially important for large dogs after eating. No heavy play for an hour after eating. This will help prevent serious medical conditions such as bloat or twisted stomach.

·        Dogs should always have access to clean water. If you have a puppy, remember that their bladders are still small and they will need to potty more frequently.

This most important thing to remember is to enjoy your new family member. Play fetch, take walks, give lots of pets, and start looking for new ways to keep that active mind engaged.
